Why We Source Bentonita from Chifeng & Chaoyang

Redhill sources bentonite from the Chifeng and Chaoyang mineral belt in Inner Mongolia and Liaoning, the region behind most of the world's mined cat litter. Here's why that matters for buyers.

When you evaluate a bentonite cat litter supplier, one of the most useful questions to ask isn't just "what's your price" — it's "where does your raw material actually come from." China's bentonite cat litter industry is heavily concentrated in one cross-border mineral belt, and where a supplier sits relative to that belt affects raw material cost, batch consistency, and how quickly they can scale an order.

Where China's bentonite cat litter actually comes from

Unlike some sourcing regions where deposits are scattered across a wide area, most of China's mined cat litter bentonite comes from a compact belt at the meeting point of Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, and Hebei — specifically Ningcheng County in Chifeng (Inner Mongolia) and Jianping County in Chaoyang (Liaoning). Redhill sources its bentonite from processors in this belt.

Ningcheng County, Chifeng (Inner Mongolia)

Ningcheng is widely referred to in Chinese industry and government reporting as "China's Arena para gatos Iniciotown." Local and state media report that the county accounts for roughly two-thirds of national bentonite cat litter output and around one-fifth of world output, produced across more than 30 local manufacturers. The county sits on a national-class bentonite deposit, with proven reserves reported above 16 million tons and prospective resources estimated near 2 billion tons.

Jianping County, Chaoyang (Liaoning)

Just across the provincial border, Jianping carries the title "China's Bentonita Iniciotown" and has been developing a dedicated cat litter industrial park. Local government reporting credits the county with roughly half of national mineral cat litter output by some measures, produced by more than 50 bentonite mining and processing enterprises. Proven reserves within licensed mining areas are reported near 27 million tons, with prospective resources estimated above 200 million tons.

These two figures — "two-thirds" from Ningcheng and "roughly half" from Jianping — come from different local sources measuring different scopes (national cat litter output vs. mineral cat litter output specifically), so they shouldn't be read as precisely reconcilable. The consistent takeaway across both regions is the same: this belt, not the country as a whole, is where the bulk of China's bentonite cat litter actually gets mined and processed.

Why the geology matters for buyers

Two things about this belt's geology translate directly into product performance:

  • Band-distributed deposits. The bentonite here sits in continuous bands rather than scattered pockets, which makes extraction more consistent from batch to batch — a meaningful factor if your brand needs the same clumping and dust performance shipment after shipment.
  • High sodium-bentonite content. The mineral grade must be confirmed lot by lot. Compradors should use the COA and finished-product tests, rather than an origin label alone, to approve clumping and dust targets.

The logistics advantage

Ningcheng and Jianping sit at the junction of Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, and Hebei, within reasonable trucking distance of several Bohai Rim ports:

PortApprox. distance
Jinzhou~200 km
Tianjin~400 km
Dalian~500 km

In much of this belt, mines sit directly beside processing plants. That proximity cuts handling and energy costs, and gives factories more flexibility to schedule equipment maintenance around demand rather than around transport logistics — a small but real contributor to the cost-effectiveness of bentonite litter out of this region.

What this means for Redhill's supply chain

Redhill's bentonite raw material comes from processors within this belt rather than from a single in-house mine. In practice, that means direct, short-haul relationships with mine-adjacent processors instead of long-distance domestic freight, and it's part of why bentonite remains our most cost-competitive product line. Every inbound batch is tested on arrival, with COA and MSDS documentation available per shipment — sourcing region tells you about typical cost and consistency, but batch-level testing is what actually confirms a given shipment meets spec.

A maturing, consolidating industry — not a fragmented backwater

Both counties have moved in recent years from loose collections of small township factories toward more organized industry structures: local cat litter trade associations, group technical standards, and government-backed industrial parks consolidating smaller producers into larger, more standardized facilities. That's a meaningful shift for buyers, because it means quality and documentation practices are becoming more consistent across the region — though real variation between individual factories still exists. Origin region narrows down where to look; it doesn't replace evaluating the specific factory you're buying from. Preguntas frecuentes

Is bentonite cat litter from this region lower quality because it's inexpensive? +

No — the low cost mostly reflects proximity to the mine and industry scale, not a lower quality tier. That said, quality still varies factory to factory within the region, so ask for batch-level lab data (clumping strength, dust level, sieve size) rather than assuming origin alone guarantees spec.

Does Redhill mine its own bentonite? +

No — Redhill sources bentonite from established mine-adjacent processors within the Chifeng–Chaoyang belt rather than operating its own mine. Every inbound batch is tested on arrival, with COA and MSDS available per shipment.

Why does origin region matter if I'm buying from a manufacturer, not a mine? +

Transport cost, raw material consistency, and how quickly a factory can scale an order all trace back to how close that factory sits to the mine. Origin region is a reasonable first filter during supplier evaluation — it should be followed by factory-level due diligence, not used as a substitute for it.
