Three names that should not be used interchangeably.
Bentonite is a rock dominated by smectite-group clay minerals, most commonly montmorillonite. Its commercial behavior depends on mineral purity, layer charge, associated minerals and the cations held between smectite layers. The terms sodium and calcium describe the dominant exchangeable-cation character; sodium activation describes a post-mining treatment.

Ash or tuff
Felsic to intermediate volcanic ash, tuff or glass-rich pyroclastic material is deposited in a basin or altered in place.

Water-rock reaction
Groundwater, lake water, marine water or hydrothermal fluids react with unstable volcanic glass.

Smectite develops
Volcanic glass alters to montmorillonite-rich clay, while quartz, feldspar, cristobalite or other minerals may remain.

Pore-water chemistry and later alteration influence whether sodium, calcium or mixed cations dominate the exchange sites.
Natural sodium bentonite forms where the untreated ore develops a sodium-dominant exchange complex. Natural calcium bentonite develops with calcium-dominant, often calcium-magnesium, exchange chemistry. These are natural variations within montmorillonite-rich deposits, not different manufacturing recipes.
Sodium activation happens after mining. Finely prepared calcium or mixed-cation bentonite is treated with a soluble sodium source, usually soda ash (Na2CO3). Sodium exchanges with part of the interlayer calcium; appropriate moisture, mixing and ageing allow the reaction and hydration properties to develop. The response is ore-specific, so a recipe cannot be transferred blindly from one deposit to another.

HYDRATION
Why sodium usually swells more
Monovalent Na+ supports a more expansive diffuse double layer and greater osmotic swelling in fresh water. Divalent Ca2+ binds clay layers more strongly, so calcium bentonite normally shows lower free swell.
CLUMPING
Why mineral type is not enough
Clump speed, mass, strength and sticking also depend on montmorillonite content, particle distribution, drying, moisture, granule porosity, fines and any binder or odor-control additive.
USE CONDITIONS
Why tests need a defined liquid
Salts and multivalent cations can suppress smectite swelling. Results measured with distilled water, saline solution or a urine simulant are not automatically equivalent.
04 / Regional geology
What the Chifeng-Chaoyang origin can genuinely support.
Published work on Ningcheng, Chifeng places bentonite in Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation strata within the Wujiazi-Reshuitang Mesozoic volcanic basin. The studied deposit is described as volcanic-sedimentary in origin, montmorillonite-dominant and industrially calcium bentonite.
Research on the Zidutai-Yusi Basin in western Liaoning reports that glass-rich sedimentary tuff, rhyolitic ignimbrite and sandy tuff are favorable precursors for hydrolysis and bentonite formation. The work identifies both calcium- and sodium-bentonite development in northern deposits, including an upper calcium / lower sodium layered relationship in studied sections. A separate Chaoyang County study describes stratiform bentonite bodies hosted in rhyolitic breccia tuff of the Lanqi Formation.
Geological advantage
Multiple volcanic-sedimentary basins and mineral routes
The regional record supports calcium, sodium and mixed-cation sourcing possibilities rather than a one-material story. This creates options for direct use, selective mining, blending or controlled activation.
Industrial advantage
Raw material and processing are geographically connected
Ningcheng publicly reports substantial bentonite resources, while the Chifeng-Chaoyang border area has established mineral processing and cat litter production. Shorter coordination between ore selection, processing and finished-product manufacture can support faster corrective action.
Quality advantage
Layered deposits allow more precise source control
Where cation type and mineral composition vary by bed or mining level, bench-level identification and stockpile segregation can be used to build more consistent feedstock. The advantage exists only when traceability is actually implemented.
Necessary limitation
A regional name is not a specification
Not every deposit in Chifeng or Chaoyang has the same cation status, montmorillonite content or accessory minerals. Buyers should avoid claims such as all-natural sodium or universally superior clumping unless the selected source and batch evidence support them.

Particle-size distribution, bulk density, moisture, color, fines and dust method.

TRACEABILITY
Mine or approved source, stockpile or lot, production batch, COA, retained sample and change notification.
A useful certificate of analysis states the method and acceptance limit, not only a result. For activated material, include activation status in the specification and require notification before the ore source, activation route or dosage window changes.

Frequently asked questions
Is natural sodium bentonite always better for cat litter?+
No. It commonly offers stronger swelling potential, but finished cat litter also depends on montmorillonite content, associated minerals, particle distribution, moisture, drying, dust removal, additives and packaging. Approve the SKU against an agreed test method.
Is sodium-activated bentonite fake sodium bentonite?+
No. It is a legitimate processed material, but it must be described accurately. It begins as calcium- or mixed-cation bentonite and is sodium-activated after mining, commonly with sodium carbonate. It should not be represented as naturally sodium-dominant ore.
Can XRD alone distinguish natural sodium from sodium-activated bentonite?+
Not reliably as a complete commercial determination. XRD identifies mineral phases and supports montmorillonite assessment, while exchangeable-cation analysis, CEC, swelling, chemical data, source declarations and process records are also needed.
Is all Chifeng-Chaoyang bentonite sodium bentonite?+
No. Published work reports calcium bentonite in Ningcheng and both calcium- and sodium-bentonite layers in parts of western Liaoning. Source and bench-level traceability matter more than a broad regional label.
What should be fixed in a cat litter purchase specification?+
At minimum define mineral route, approved source or change-control rule, particle-size distribution, moisture, bulk density, dust method and limit, absorption method, clump mass or strength method, color and odor requirements, and batch-release records.
